When a deep cavity, a cracked tooth, or a severe trauma allows bacteria to breach the hard outer shell, that soft pulp becomes infected. An inflamed or infected nerve is exactly what causes that intense, throbbing toothache that keeps you awake at night.

A root canal is simply a medical rescue mission. The dentist removes the infected, dead pulp from the inside of the tooth, cleans the hollow space thoroughly, and seals it up to prevent future bacterial attacks. Dr. Suman Gupta: “Unfortunately, no. I hear this quite often, but a sudden stop in pain is actually a major warning sign. When a severely infected tooth stops hurting entirely, it usually means the nerve inside the tooth has died. Because the nerve is dead, it can no longer send pain signals to your brain. However, the bacteria are still very much alive and actively spreading into your jawbone. If you cancel your procedure now, that silent infection will eventually trigger a massive, painful abscess later on. The root canal is still absolutely necessary right now to clean out the dead tissue, stop the spread, and save your tooth.”

What to Expect in the Dentist’s Chair

The actual procedure is highly straightforward and comfortable.

1. Total Numbing: Before anything begins, the area is heavily numbed with a strong local anesthetic. You will feel physical pressure while the doctor works, but you will not feel sharp pain.
2. Cleaning and Shaping: A small opening is made in the top of the tooth, and specialized micro-tools are used to gently clear out the infected pulp and clean the root canals.
3. Filling and Sealing: Once completely sterilized, the hollow root spaces are filled with a biocompatible rubber-like material, and the tooth is temporarily sealed.
4. The Final Crown: Because a tooth without a living nerve becomes brittle over time, you will usually return for a custom-fitted dental crown. This acts as a protective helmet, restoring the tooth’s full biting strength and natural appearance.
